STORY
the zaloy origin

We’ve got proof this thing works. From 50 years ago.

About 50 years ago, a woman named Jenrose Miller launched a program at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky called Patient Representatives.

The program was pretty simple: her team approached patients in the hospital – trained with great bedside manner, quite literally – to ask them if there was anything they could do to improve their stay.

They discovered something that would change the healthcare business forever: compassion and data saves the hospital a lot of money.

By doing three things – being empathic listeners, directing attention to the needs of the patients, and aggregating feedback to the administration – patients were discharged faster. People who feel cared for heal faster.
As this Patient Representatives team listened to the complaints from patients, which ranged from “the doctor isn’t spending enough time explaining what’s happening” to “the hospital food is terrible”, they were able to accomplish several things at once:

1. By being a great listener, the team provided a trusted ear for the patients to vent and that made the patients feel like their needs were being cared for;

2. Sometimes the team could solve immediate issues to improve the stay of some patients;

3. The team could aggregate the patient sentiment back to the hospital administration so that changes could be made to improve the hospitalization experience.

As these three aspects unfolded, a funny thing happened: the patients were seemingly healing faster with shorter stays in the hospital… and that saved the hospital money.

Jenrose went on to become the President of the National Patient Representatives organization and laid the groundwork for what would become the Patient Bill of Rights.

She was a mother and later went on to become my mother. So I’ve heard a thing or two about how this model worked. I’ve learned about how good listening and empathy can make a difference.

That’s where Zaloy starts: we believe that impact begins with empathetic listening and using what you learn as the means for compassionate action.

why now

Of course, there’s more to the story. It's our collective story.

 Zaloy is focused on helping people reduce or eliminate their chronic stress to live healthier lives. The origin of that mission doesn’t begin with one story or at a place and time. It’s the millions of stories unfolding in real-time.

We hear stories from all walks of life. The work-life stressors are crippling us. We see the data at OrgVitals, the preventive health data platform for the workplace. We see the data in the research at the University of Louisville called Work Determinants of Health employed by OrgVitals data models. The Great Resignation is the canary in the coal mine. We’re fed up. We feel how chronic stress is sucking the life out of us.

I’ve lost workaholic friends to heart attacks. I’ve seen family members take early retirement because of stress-induced chronic health issues. We all know mothers and caregivers who have left the workforce, not out of choice, but because the burden of work and family is an incredible burden. Underserved communities are largely trapped in a vicious cycle of massive financial stress with poor access to wellness support and preventive health options. My own health has been impacted, in fact.

Chronic work stress began impacting my health in my late 30s. I tried exercise, meditation, improved nutrition and sleep. Yet what really changed matters for me is when I seredipitiously encountered a coach and, through his guidance, developed a mental practice to better manage. When it comes to well-being, what works for one person may not work for the next person. Figuring out what fits is part of the issue. Knowing where to start is the other part.

The vision behind Zaloy is to replace Google searches and serendipity with an easy starting point for people to discover what type of well-being approach works best for them. Just like with the Patient Representives program 50 years ago, Zaloy starts with listening and bedside manner. Our care team is your private and compassionate work-life sherpa to help you begin to navigate your work-life stressors. Join the community that cares.
